What does heat rash mean in children?

A child may have tiny red or skin-coloured bumps, a prickly or itchy feeling, and patches where clothing covers the body. It commonly appears on the neck, upper chest, back, hairline, or in skin creases. Babies can develop it after being overdressed, wrapped tightly, or lying in a warm room. Heat rash is different from a fever: the rash reflects local irritation, while a fever is a raised body temperature.

Cooling the skin often reduces discomfort. Scratching can break the skin and invite infection, so keep fingernails short and offer gentle distraction. A rash that spreads, oozes, becomes very tender, or does not settle deserves a clinical assessment; other childhood rashes can look similar.

Move the child to a cooler place and remove extra layers. Use loose, breathable clothing and let damp skin dry. A cool, clean, damp cloth can soothe the area; pat rather than rub. Keep baths lukewarm, avoid fragranced products, and do not cover the rash with thick ointments or plastic-backed clothing. Once the skin is cool and dry, ordinary play can resume if the child feels well.

Seek urgent medical help if the child is unusually sleepy, confused, struggling to breathe, repeatedly vomiting, or very hot and unable to cool down. Arrange medical advice when the rash has pus, marked swelling, increasing pain, blisters, or a fever, or when it is not improving after cooling and gentle care. An infant who seems unwell should be assessed promptly.

Ask which features support heat rash, whether another rash should be excluded, and which product is suitable for your child’s age and skin. Mention recent fever, new medicines, creams, outdoor heat, and whether the rash changed after cooling.
