Why the ears can be affected

Sweat may collect behind the ears or beneath hair, helmets, headphones and hats. Friction and trapped warmth can produce tiny itchy bumps and redness on the outer ear or nearby skin. Gentle care for the area

Move to a cool environment, remove damp headwear and gently rinse the outer skin. Pat dry behind the ears and keep headphones or straps clean and loose. Do not put creams, cotton buds or oils into the ear canal. For outer-ear skin only, ask a clinician whether a light Emollient Therapy product is suitable; use Topical Corticosteroids only when directed.

Signs that need medical review

Arrange assessment for significant ear pain, swelling, warmth, pus, foul-smelling discharge, reduced hearing or fever. Seek urgent help if swelling spreads across the face, breathing becomes difficult or you feel faint. A rash that persists after cooling, or a Skin Rash that reaches the ear canal, may need a different treatment.
