Heat rash in early pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can bring increased warmth, sweating and skin sensitivity. When sweat remains against the skin, small prickly bumps may form, especially beneath clothing or in folds. Heat rash is different from a pregnancy-specific itchy eruption, an allergy or infection, so the distribution and appearance matter. Skin Bumps and Skin Rash are useful terms to discuss at an appointment.

Use cool—not very cold—compresses, stay hydrated, choose loose cotton clothing and keep folds dry. Wash gently and avoid fragranced sprays, essential oils and thick products that hold in heat. Before using a medicated cream, including Topical Corticosteroids, check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist. They can also advise whether Emollient Therapy suits the area.

Contact your maternity team if itching is intense, widespread, worse at night, involves the palms or soles, or comes with blisters, fever, pain or discharge. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, fainting or confusion. A rash with persistent Skin Redness should not be assumed to be heat rash simply because the weather is warm.
