How long does heat rash last?

Heat rash can fade as sweating and friction decrease. Continued heat, humidity, tight fabric or repeated exercise can keep sweat ducts irritated. Itching and prickling may ease before the bumps disappear. If the pattern changes, becomes scaly or forms blisters, the diagnosis may be different; compare with Skin Bumps or Skin Rash information.

Keep the area cool, dry and gently cleansed. Choose loose clothing, change out of damp garments and avoid scratching. Do not apply thick, greasy layers that trap warmth. If discomfort continues, ask a clinician about a bland moisturiser or whether Emollient Therapy is appropriate; treatment such as Topical Corticosteroids should be used only with suitable advice.

Seek an appointment if the rash is not settling after cooling measures, keeps returning without an obvious heat trigger, or develops pus, increasing tenderness, spreading warmth or fever.
