When heat rash does not go away

How the structures involved in Heat Rash differ from normal

Short answer

Heat rash that does not go away after cooling and drying the skin should be reassessed, because another irritation, infection or skin condition may look similar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may persist

Heat rash is linked with blocked sweat ducts and usually improves when warmth, sweat and friction are reduced. Persistence can mean the area is still being exposed to heat or occlusion, or that the rash is not heat rash. Contact irritation, eczema, yeast and bacterial infection may affect covered or folded skin and can require different care. Redness alone cannot identify the cause.

Steps while arranging advice

Keep the area cool, clean and dry; wear loose breathable clothing and change out of damp garments promptly. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and pat rather than rub. Stop newly introduced fragranced products until the skin is assessed. A clinician may suggest [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) or another treatment after examination. Do not start [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) without advice, since the right product depends on the site and diagnosis.

When to seek care

Book an appointment when the rash keeps returning, spreads, disrupts sleep, or fails to improve despite sensible cooling and drying. Seek prompt assessment for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, open skin, blisters or fever. Urgent care is appropriate for a rapidly spreading rash or someone who is very unwell. Bring a list of products used and photos showing how the rash changed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the appearance fits heat rash, what else should be considered, and how long to try the recommended care. Mention the body site, heat exposure, recurrence, itch or pain, and any new detergent, clothing, medicine or skincare.

Questions people ask

Does persistent heat rash mean it is dangerous?

Not necessarily, but a rash that persists deserves assessment because several conditions can resemble heat rash and need different treatment.

What should I record before an appointment?

Note when it began, where it appears, heat or sweating triggers, symptoms, products used and any change in size, color or surface.
