Heat rash in the diaper area: what to know

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, develops when blocked sweat ducts keep sweat close to the skin. In a diaper area, a warm covering, perspiration, urine or stool can add moisture and friction. The skin may look red, feel irritated, or show tiny bumps in creases and covered areas. A diaper rash from irritation, yeast or another skin problem can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Change wet or soiled diapers promptly and rinse with lukewarm water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry rather than rubbing, allow short periods without a diaper when practical, and choose a breathable, loose fit. Avoid fragranced wipes, powders and thick products that hold heat against the skin. Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, very sore, blistered, oozing, crusted, or not settling after reducing heat and moisture. Seek prompt care for a child who has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or has rapidly worsening skin.
