Heat rash diagnosis: what to expect

The examination may consider the rash's location, colour, texture, symmetry, and whether it sits in a warm or covered area. The clinician may ask when it began, whether sweating or a hot environment preceded it, and whether it itches, stings, hurts, or leaks fluid. Small bumps or blisters with a prickling sensation can support heat rash. Skin rash, skin bumps, and redness have many possible causes, so the clinician may compare nearby skin and ask about new products, medicines, illness, or contact exposures.

Note when the eruption appeared and what heat, exercise, clothing, creams, detergents, or medicines came before it. Photographing a changing rash in natural light can help show its earlier pattern. Keep the area cool and dry while waiting, use gentle cleansing, and avoid scratching or applying several new products. If the appearance is typical, testing may not be needed. Treatment depends on the findings and can include cooling measures, an emollient for dryness, or a clinician-directed topical corticosteroid for inflammation.

Arrange a review if the rash is persistent, recurrent, spreading, painful, or unclear after cooling. Prompt care is needed for pus, yellow crusting, increasing warmth, swelling, fever, or feeling unwell, because these findings may indicate infection or another condition. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash.
