Heat rash and dermatitis: how they differ

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, follows sweating and blocked ducts. It often causes fine bumps or a prickling sensation in warm, occluded areas. Dermatitis may cause dryness, scaling, cracking, itching, or broader patches after contact with soaps, fragrances, metals, plants, or other irritants. The two can overlap: heat and sweat may irritate already sensitive skin, and rubbing can intensify either problem. A symptom such as a rash does not identify its cause by itself; pattern, timing, texture, and exposures help guide diagnosis.

Cool the skin, reduce sweating, wear loose breathable clothes, and rinse away likely irritants with gentle cleansing. Pat dry rather than rubbing, particularly in folds. Pause new fragranced products and avoid scratching. An emollient can help dry, cracked skin, but a heavy occlusive layer may feel worse in a sweaty area. A clinician may recommend a topical corticosteroid for dermatitis or marked inflammation after checking the diagnosis and the body site.

Seek medical advice when the eruption keeps returning, spreads beyond sweaty areas, forms painful cracks, leaks fluid, develops crusting, or does not improve with cooling and gentle care. Fever, increasing warmth, swelling, or tenderness needs prompt assessment. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a rapidly spreading reaction.

Ask whether the pattern fits heat rash, contact dermatitis, eczema, or infection; which triggers to avoid; and whether a prescribed anti-inflammatory product is suitable for the affected site. Bring a list of recent products and medicines.
