Heat rash on dark skin: what to look for

Look for clusters of tiny bumps, a rough or prickly texture, itching, stinging, warmth, or small clear blisters in areas that have been sweaty or covered. Common sites include the neck, chest, back, armpits, groin, and skin folds. Compare the area with nearby skin in natural light, and notice whether it feels raised or irritated even when colour change is subtle. After the inflammation settles, temporary darker or lighter colour can remain; this is different from an active rash but should gradually be monitored.

Use cool air or a cool damp cloth, take breaks from heat, and change damp clothing promptly. Clean gently with lukewarm water and pat dry, especially inside folds. Choose loose, breathable fabric and avoid rubbing, exfoliating acids, bleaching products, and heavily fragranced creams on irritated skin. A light emollient may support dry surrounding skin. If itching or inflammation is significant, a clinician can advise whether a topical corticosteroid is appropriate and how long to use it.

Arrange an assessment if bumps become painful, hot, swollen, ooze, crust, or fail to settle after the skin is cooled and kept dry. Seek prompt care for fever, spreading tenderness, or feeling unwell. A clinician should also review a persistent colour change, because infection, eczema, allergy, and other conditions may resemble heat rash on any skin tone.

Ask which features support heat rash, whether the remaining colour is post-inflammatory change, and which products are safe for your skin. Mention itching, pain, drainage, recent heat exposure, and any new cream or detergent.
