Heat rash common areas: where it appears

The neck, upper chest, back, waist, groin, armpits, and areas beneath breasts can be affected. In babies, it may show on the neck, upper back, chest, or covered parts of the body. Small raised spots, tiny fluid-filled bumps, prickling, itching, or a burning feeling may occur. Skin can look red or darker than nearby skin, depending on your natural complexion. A rash limited to a warm, sweaty area supports heat as a trigger, but other rashes can look similar.

Move to a cooler place, loosen or remove damp clothing, and let the skin dry. Wear light, breathable clothing and avoid tight straps or waistbands over the area. A cool, damp cloth can soothe irritation; pat rather than scrub. Wash gently, then dry carefully within folds. Avoid thick ointments, fragranced products, and heavy oils that may further block sweat ducts. An emollient may help if surrounding skin is dry, while a clinician may recommend a topical corticosteroid for persistent inflammation.

Seek medical advice if the rash spreads, becomes painful, develops pus or crusting, or does not improve after cooling and reducing friction. Arrange prompt care for fever, marked swelling, feeling very unwell, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from infection, eczema, allergy, or another cause and choose suitable treatment.

Ask whether the location and appearance fit heat rash, whether another condition should be excluded, and which product is appropriate for the affected fold. Mention recent heat exposure, sweating, new clothing, medicines, and any tenderness or discharge.
