Heat rash while breastfeeding

Warmth, sweating and repeated skin contact under the breast or around the chest can trap moisture. Heat rash may look like tiny bumps, prickly skin or small blisters, and friction from nursing bras can add irritation. A rash on the nipple or areola can have other causes, including irritation or infection, so its exact location and whether feeding is painful are useful details. Keep the room and skin cool when possible. After feeds, gently rinse sweat or milk from the fold, pat dry and change damp breast pads or clothing. Choose a supportive bra that is breathable and not tight across the rash. Avoid fragranced products and thick occlusive ointments on areas that stay moist. A plain emollient may suit dry skin; see Emollient Therapy, but ask a pharmacist or clinician before using any product on the nipple because the infant may ingest residue. Arrange advice if the rash affects the nipple, causes cracks or bleeding, makes feeding painful, or does not improve after reducing heat and moisture. Seek prompt care for fever, a hot painful breast, a firm tender area, pus, rapidly spreading redness or feeling unwell, as these can require assessment for a breast infection. Ask before stopping breastfeeding or changing treatment; the safest plan depends on the site and appearance.
