Heat rash appearance: what it looks and feels like

Heat rash, also called prickly heat or miliaria, develops when sweat cannot reach the skin surface easily. The blocked sweat ducts create clusters rather than a single isolated mark. You may notice prickling, itching, or a stinging feeling, especially after exercise, hot weather, tight clothing, or prolonged skin-to-skin contact.

The colour can look different across skin tones: redness may be subtle on deeper skin, while swelling or a rough texture may be easier to see or feel. Move to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and keep the area dry and gently clean. A cool damp cloth can ease prickling; allow the skin to air-dry rather than rubbing it. Choose breathable fabrics and pause activities that cause heavy sweating until the irritation settles.

Avoid thick, greasy products over fresh bumps because they can further trap sweat.
