Short answer

Heat hives on the arms can appear after sweating or warming up, often as itchy bumps that improve when the skin cools.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the arms may flare

Cholinergic urticaria is a heat-triggered hive response. The arms may be involved after exercise, hot weather, a warm shower, stress, or sleeves that trap heat and sweat. Tiny bumps can merge into larger raised areas, and itching or stinging may occur. The pattern can extend beyond the arms because the trigger is a change in body temperature, not a problem limited to one limb.

A fixed patch, scaling, crusting, bruising, or pain is less typical of hives. Take a clear photograph and note whether the rash changes location or fades after cooling.

Care for an arm flare

Pause exercise, move somewhere cooler, remove tight or damp sleeves, and cool the arms with a damp cloth. Keep nails short and avoid rubbing or scratching. Wear loose breathable clothing and check whether detergents, fabrics, or topical products coincide with symptoms. Do not use a very hot shower to relieve itch.

For repeated episodes, a clinician can discuss whether an oral antihistamine is suitable and how it fits your health history. See [Antihistamine Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/oral-antihistamine-therapy/).

When to seek care

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms. Seek a routine assessment if arm lesions persist, become painful, leave dark or bruise-like marks, or return often despite cooling. A clinician can distinguish hives from dermatitis, bites, or other skin conditions.

Questions for your doctor

Does the arm pattern fit heat hives? Could clothing, detergent, or exercise be contributing? Should I use an antihistamine before a known trigger? What changes in colour, texture, or symptoms should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask

Are heat hives on the arms contagious?

Heat hives are an individual skin reaction and do not spread from person to person.

Could arm hives be caused by clothing?

Heat and sweat trapped by tight or non-breathable clothing can contribute, while detergent or fabric irritation may cause a different rash.
