What should you know about heat exposure rash?

Heat Rash may appear as tiny red bumps, prickling, or itch where sweat collects. Rubbing from clothing or skin folds can add soreness and make Intertrigo more likely. A sharply outlined rash after a new sunscreen, fabric, or product may be Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis can flare with heat, while Ringworm and Scabies have their own patterns and do not result simply from being hot. A medicine-related eruption is another possibility if the rash began after a new drug.

Stop the heat exposure and rest in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place. Rinse sweat off gently, pat the skin dry, and change into loose clothing. Keep folds separated and dry without vigorous rubbing. Avoid heavy oils, perfumed lotions, and further heat until the skin calms. Do not apply a product to blistered or open skin unless a clinician advises it. Note where the rash started and what touched the area.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, confusion, or a rapidly spreading rash with hives. Seek prompt medical care for blisters, severe tenderness, skin peeling, fever, pus, red streaks, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Arrange a review if the rash keeps returning, spreads after leaving the heat, or does not improve with cooling and gentle skin care.
