What should you know about heat burn rash?

Short answer
A heat burn rash can be irritated, red, or prickly skin after warmth, sweating, or rubbing, and its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Heat, sweat, friction, or hot-surface contact
- First step
- Cool the skin and keep it dry
What it may mean
Heat can increase sweating and soften the outer skin. Sweat trapped near the surface may cause small bumps or a prickling sensation, while damp folds and repeated rubbing can create soreness and redness. Contact with a hot surface is different: it may cause a burn with pain, tenderness, blistering, or peeling. A rash that persists may instead be Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, a Drug Rash, or another condition such as Heat Rash.
What you can do now
Move to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and gently rinse away sweat with lukewarm water. Pat dry rather than rubbing, wear breathable fabric, and avoid fragranced products or thick ointments over moist areas. Do not break blisters. A cool, clean compress may ease discomfort. If the skin is broken, keep it clean and seek advice about suitable wound care.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, widespread blistering, or severe pain. Arrange a clinical assessment if the rash is spreading, draining, feverish, increasingly tender, or not settling after cooling and gentle care. A clinician can distinguish Heat Rash from infection, eczema, psoriasis, or a burn.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a heat rash, contact reaction, or burn? Which products should I stop or use? What changes would mean I need a same-day review?

Questions people ask
Can a heat rash feel like a burn?
Yes. Irritated skin may sting or feel hot, but blistering or marked pain needs assessment for a burn or another cause.
Should I scratch the rash?
Avoid scratching because it can damage the skin and raise the chance of infection.
