Heat bumps on Black skin: what to know

Blocked sweat ducts can cause heat rash, while inflamed follicles may cause folliculitis. Keratosis pilaris can create persistent rough bumps, and milia are small firm cysts rather than sweat bumps. Lichen planus is another condition that can leave itchy raised or darkened areas. In deeper skin tones, redness may be subtle, so warmth, swelling, tenderness, scaling, drainage, and changes in colour are useful clues. A photo in consistent light can help track change, but it cannot replace an examination.

Keep the area cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and choose loose fabrics. Wash gently without scrubbing, picking, bleaching products, or harsh exfoliants. Avoid heavy occlusive products on a sweaty area until the cause is clearer. Do not freeze or burn a bump at home. A clinician may suggest an oral antihistamine treatment for itch, while a discrete lesion requiring removal may be assessed for a procedure such as cryotherapy.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, rapidly spreading swelling, severe pain, fever, or skin that becomes blistered or starts peeling. Arrange a dermatology review for pus, a tender enlarging lump, bleeding, a firm bump that does not settle, or a new dark or light mark that keeps changing. Early review can reduce unnecessary irritation and help protect against lingering colour change.
