Heartburn side effects

Heartburn may feel like burning behind the breastbone and can bring a sour taste, regurgitation, belching, cough, or throat irritation. A medicine used for relief can instead cause effects such as altered bowel habits, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or an unusual taste, depending on the product. Symptoms that persist may reflect acid reflux or another condition such as gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer rather than a medicine effect.

Record when the symptom began, when you take the product, and whether it follows meals. Check the active ingredients, because different brands can contain similar medicines. Speak with a pharmacist before adding another remedy or changing a regular prescription. Simple measures such as smaller meals, avoiding personal triggers, and staying upright after eating may reduce reflux while the cause is clarified. If a medicine causes troublesome effects, a clinician can suggest a safer schedule or alternative.

Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, swelling of the face or tongue, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange a medical review for persistent vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or heartburn that keeps returning despite treatment. Do not assume a new or severe symptom is a routine side effect.
