How heartburn develops
Heartburn is a burning discomfort caused when stomach contents travel upward into the food pipe. It can follow a large meal, bending, or lying down. A sour taste, burping, or irritation in the throat may occur as well. Repeated symptoms can reflect acid reflux, while gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can produce overlapping discomfort. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause.
Remedies to try
Eat smaller meals, slow down, and avoid lying down soon after eating. Reduce only the foods that clearly trigger your symptoms; common examples include rich meals, spicy foods, acidic foods, chocolate, and caffeine. Raise your upper body at night and avoid tight clothing around your abdomen. A pharmacist or clinician can help select an antacid, alginate, or acid-reducing medicine, taking account of other medicines and health conditions. See Acid Reflux Medication for more treatment context.
When self-care is not enough
Arrange medical advice if heartburn is frequent, worsening, affecting sleep, or returning after treatment. Seek urgent help for severe or spreading chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or trouble swallowing. Unexplained weight loss or persistent vomiting also warrants prompt assessment.
What to ask
Ask what may be causing the pattern, which remedy suits your medicines and medical history, and how long to try it. Keep a note of meals, timing, night symptoms, and any swallowing difficulty.
