Heartburn after pregnancy: what should you know?

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone, sometimes with a sour taste or belching. Pregnancy changes can relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe and slow digestion. Acid reflux is one possible explanation; gastritis or a hiatus hernia can feel similar. A symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, remain upright after eating and avoid personal triggers. Leave time before lying down and raise the upper body safely for sleep.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, affect eating or do not improve. Prompt review is needed for painful swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, black stools, blood in vomit or unexplained weight loss.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw.
