When does heartburn start in pregnancy?

Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle that normally keeps stomach contents down. As the abdomen changes, pressure can also encourage reflux. Some people notice burning early, while others develop it later or only after particular meals. Some do not experience it at all. Heartburn is a symptom of reflux, not a dependable way to date a pregnancy or assess fetal wellbeing.

If pregnancy is possible, use a pregnancy test according to its instructions and arrange routine maternity care after a positive result. Mention new or troublesome reflux at an appointment, especially if it began suddenly or feels unusual.

Eat smaller portions, avoid lying flat after meals, and identify foods or drinks that trigger burning for you. Eat slowly, leave time between dinner and sleep, and raise your upper body when resting. Wear comfortable clothing around the abdomen. If symptoms continue, ask a pharmacist or maternity clinician about a treatment suitable for your pregnancy rather than choosing a product based only on its name.

Seek medical advice if reflux is frequent, painful, affecting sleep, or making it hard to eat or drink. Promptly report severe upper abdominal pain, a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or feeling very unwell, which can need assessment for pre-eclampsia. Emergency help is needed for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools.
