How long does heartburn last?

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents move upward and irritate the food pipe. It may follow a large meal, lying down soon after eating, or foods that trigger reflux. Repeated episodes can occur with acid reflux, while gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can also cause upper abdominal or chest discomfort. The duration alone cannot identify the cause.

Stay upright, loosen tight clothing around your abdomen, and avoid bending forward after eating. Smaller meals and leaving time between eating and lying down may reduce repeat symptoms. Keep a note of foods, medicines, timing, and position when symptoms occur. A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether an acid reflux medication is suitable for you, especially if episodes are frequent.

Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Arrange medical assessment if heartburn keeps returning, lasts despite self-care, causes trouble swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or persistent pain. These warning signs need evaluation rather than being attributed to simple reflux.

Ask what pattern suggests reflux, whether another condition should be considered, and which medicines could worsen symptoms. Tell the clinician how long each episode lasts, what you ate beforehand, whether symptoms wake you, and what relieves them.
