Heartburn from taking pills: what to know

A pill can stick briefly in the oesophagus if swallowed with too little fluid or while lying down. Local irritation may cause burning or pain behind the breastbone. Some medicines relax the muscle that normally helps keep stomach contents down, and some can irritate the stomach lining. The timing after a dose is useful, but it does not identify the medicine by itself.

Heartburn may also reflect acid reflux, gastritis, or another digestive problem that happened to become noticeable after treatment began. Record the medicine name, dose, time taken, fluid used, and symptoms.

Take tablets with the amount of water stated in the instructions, remain upright when required, and follow the label or prescriber directions about food. Never crush, split, or open a medicine unless a pharmacist confirms that it is suitable. Do not stop an essential prescription on your own.

Ask a pharmacist to check whether the medicine, its timing, or a different formulation could be responsible. They can also check interactions with antacids or acid reflux medication.

Contact a clinician promptly if swallowing is painful, food feels stuck, symptoms continue after the dose is changed, or you are vomiting. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, faintness, vomiting blood, or black stools. A sudden severe reaction with swelling or wheezing needs emergency care.

Ask whether the medicine can irritate the oesophagus or stomach, how it should be taken, and whether an alternative is appropriate. Bring the packet or an accurate list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and supplements.
