Heartburn before labor

Late pregnancy can make reflux easier to trigger. Hormonal relaxation of the stomach valve and pressure from the growing uterus may let acid move into the food pipe, especially after a large meal or while reclining. Burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the throat, and repeated burping fit this pattern. Heartburn can happen near the end of pregnancy without labor following immediately. Labor is assessed through a pattern of contractions and other physical changes, not heartburn alone. Ongoing upper-abdominal discomfort may have another explanation, such as acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer.

Choose smaller portions and remain upright after eating. Avoid foods and drinks that clearly bring symptoms on, and keep late snacks light. Raise your upper body when resting and loosen clothing that presses on your abdomen. Keep track of when the burning occurs, what you ate, and whether contractions, fluid leakage, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement are also present. Before using an antacid or other acid reflux medication, ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist which product and dose fit your situation.

Call your maternity unit for regular painful contractions, suspected rupture of membranes, vaginal bleeding, or reduced fetal movement according to the instructions you were given. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe upper-abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting. Do not attribute these warning symptoms to routine heartburn or assume they indicate labor.
