Heartburn and wheezing: what to know

Reflux can reach the back of the throat and trigger coughing, throat clearing, hoarseness, or a wheezing sound in some people. Symptoms may be more noticeable after eating or when lying down. Acid reflux is not the only explanation: asthma, an infection, an allergic reaction, or another lung or heart problem can also cause wheeze. Heartburn does not prove that reflux caused the breathing noise. Note whether wheezing is new, happens with exercise, follows a trigger, or comes with chest tightness.

Sit upright and move away from smoke, strong scents, or any known trigger. Avoid lying flat soon after meals and choose smaller portions if eating brings on burning. Use your prescribed inhaler exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else’s medicine. If reflux is suspected, ask a clinician whether Acid Reflux Medication is suitable and whether your breathing needs a separate review. Keep a note of timing, foods, wheeze, cough, and response to prescribed treatment.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak normally, rapidly worsening wheeze, fainting, confusion, or swelling of the face or throat. Seek prompt care for new wheezing, wheeze with chest pain, fever, coughing blood, or symptoms that do not improve with your prescribed reliever. Recurrent night-time symptoms also warrant a medical appointment.

Ask whether your chest and breathing symptoms suggest reflux, asthma, infection, or another cause, and whether you need lung testing. Ask how to use your prescribed inhaler and which warning signs should trigger emergency help.
