Heartburn and tender breasts: what to know

Heartburn is a burning sensation caused by stomach contents moving upward into the food pipe. Tender breasts are more often linked with hormonal changes, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or some medicines. The timing of each symptom may be different. Acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can explain heartburn, while obesity may increase pressure that worsens reflux. Heartburn does not explain a breast change, and breast tenderness does not identify a digestive condition.

Track when the burning and breast tenderness began, where they fall in your cycle, and whether pregnancy is possible. For mild reflux, try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid clear personal triggers. Wear a supportive bra if movement worsens breast discomfort. Check medicines and supplements with a pharmacist or clinician before changing them or starting acid reflux medication. Mention any breast lump, nipple discharge, skin change, or pain in one specific area during a clinical review.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, redness with fever, or breast pain that is worsening or localised. Seek emergency care for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, faintness, vomiting blood, or black stools. If pregnancy is possible and breast tenderness comes with bleeding or severe abdominal pain, seek urgent medical advice. Recurrent heartburn also deserves review when swallowing becomes difficult or symptoms disturb sleep.
