Heartburn and menopause

Short answer
Heartburn can occur around menopause, but it is not specific to hormonal change and persistent symptoms need an appropriate digestive assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why symptoms may change
Menopause is a time of changing hormone levels and can coincide with changes in sleep, stress, weight, eating patterns, and medicines. These factors may make reflux symptoms more noticeable, but burning behind the breastbone still commonly reflects stomach contents moving into the oesophagus. Acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, obesity, and peptic ulcer disease are other possible explanations.
Heartburn should not automatically be labelled a menopause symptom. Note whether it follows meals, appears at night, or began after a new medicine or supplement.
Managing the pattern
Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Identify personal triggers such as late meals, alcohol, or spicy foods rather than removing many foods at once. Review weight changes, sleep disruption, and medicines with a clinician. If you are considering hormone treatment or already use it, mention the heartburn; do not change prescribed treatment independently. A pharmacist can advise about Acid Reflux Medication in the context of your other medicines.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe pain, or trouble swallowing. Arrange a medical review if symptoms are frequent, disturb sleep, keep returning, or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or anaemia symptoms. New chest discomfort during menopause should not be assumed to be reflux without assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be acid reflux or another digestive condition? Might any menopause treatment or supplement be affecting symptoms? Which relief options fit my current medicines? Do I need assessment for swallowing problems, bleeding, or anaemia?
