Heartburn after embryo transfer

Hormonal changes can relax the muscle between the stomach and food pipe, allowing acid to rise. Fertility medicines, including micronised progesterone, may also alter digestion or contribute to bloating. Heartburn is not a reliable sign of pregnancy, and its absence does not show that treatment has failed. Reflux can also follow a large meal, lying down soon after eating, or trigger foods.

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, remain upright after eating, and raise your upper body when resting. Reduce foods and drinks that clearly trigger symptoms, such as spicy or fatty meals, caffeine, or acidic drinks. Do not stop prescribed fertility medicine or take an antacid, herbal product, or acid medicine without checking with your fertility team. Follow the clinic’s pregnancy test timing.

Contact your clinic for persistent or worsening reflux, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, or pain that is difficult to explain. Seek urgent care for chest pressure, breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or severe abdominal pain. After treatment, severe bloating with breathlessness or reduced urination also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether your current medicines could contribute, which treatments are suitable if pregnancy is possible, and when symptoms warrant examination. Confirm which symptoms should be reported before your scheduled test.
