Heart palpitations when drinking alcohol

Alcohol can stimulate the nervous system, disturb sleep and promote dehydration. Those effects may make the heartbeat feel fast, forceful or uneven, especially during or after drinking. It can also combine with caffeine, nicotine, medicines or an existing rhythm problem. Palpitations after alcohol can occur with atrial fibrillation, but the sensation by itself cannot identify the cause. Anaemia, thyroid overactivity, anxiety and low blood sugar remain possible explanations too.

Stop drinking when palpitations begin and avoid driving. Rest somewhere cool, sip water if you can drink safely, and record what you drank, when symptoms started and whether the rhythm felt regular. Avoid adding caffeine or energy drinks. If episodes return, happen after small amounts, or continue when you are sober, arrange a clinical review. A clinician can check your pulse, medication interactions and heart rhythm rather than relying on the trigger alone.

Emergency help is needed for palpitations with chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, collapse or confusion. Seek urgent medical advice if the rhythm remains very fast or uneven, or if you develop severe weakness. Alcohol should not be used to explain away warning symptoms.
