Heart palpitations relieved by burping: what to know

Short answer
Palpitations that ease after burping may be linked with swallowed air or reflux sensations, but relief does not rule out a heart cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible association
- Gas or reflux can make chest sensations more noticeable
- Track
- Meals, posture, burping and heartbeat pattern
- Emergency signs
- Chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting
Why burping may change the sensation
Gas or reflux can create pressure behind the breastbone and make nearby heartbeat movements more noticeable. Swallowing air, fizzy drinks, eating quickly and large meals can increase burping. The heart and digestive organs sit close together, so chest sensations can be difficult to identify by feel alone.
A clinician may still consider dehydration, anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, thyroid overactivity or atrial fibrillation. Generalised anxiety can heighten attention to bodily sensations, while heart failure may cause palpitations alongside breathlessness, swelling or unusual fatigue. Symptom relief after burping does not diagnose the source.
Ways to observe and reduce triggers
Track meals, fizzy drinks, spicy or fatty foods, posture, burping, the heartbeat sensation and its duration. Eat slowly, choose smaller meals, remain upright after eating and reduce drinks that make you swallow air. Keep hydrated and avoid excess caffeine and nicotine.
Arrange a medical review if the episodes recur, happen with exercise, or occur independently of digestive symptoms. An ECG and, when needed, a portable rhythm monitor can check whether the heart rhythm changes during an episode. A clinician can also assess reflux or other digestive causes.
Do not wait with these symptoms
Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, collapse, confusion or sudden weakness, even if burping brings partial relief. Seek prompt advice for a persistent rapid or irregular heartbeat, especially with known heart disease or new ankle swelling.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether an ECG or rhythm monitor is appropriate, and which food, drink or medicine triggers deserve attention. Tell the clinician whether the sensation occurs during exertion, after meals, when lying down or with dizziness.

Questions people ask
Does burping prove the palpitations are digestive?
No. Burping may relieve pressure, but it cannot exclude a heart rhythm problem.
What details help a clinician?
Record the relation to meals, posture and exertion, plus the rhythm, duration and symptoms that accompany the episode.
