Heart palpitations during sex: what to know

Sex can briefly raise heart rate, breathing, and adrenaline, making beats feel forceful, fast, or uneven. Anxiety, dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, thyroid overactivity, or an abnormal rhythm can also contribute. Atrial fibrillation is one rhythm problem that can cause an irregular heartbeat; heart failure may cause palpitations alongside breathlessness or swelling. These symptoms do not identify one cause by themselves.

Stop and rest if the sensation is uncomfortable. Breathe slowly, avoid stimulants before sex, and drink water if you may be dehydrated. Record when it started, how long it lasted, whether the rhythm felt regular, and any chest discomfort or dizziness. Arrange a clinician visit if episodes recur, last longer than expected, or happen with ordinary activity. An examination and heart tracing can help guide next steps.

Seek emergency help for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, marked dizziness, confusion, or a heartbeat that remains very fast or irregular with weakness. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. If symptoms stop but return repeatedly, seek prompt medical advice rather than testing your limits during sex.
