Are heart palpitations dangerous?

Short answer
Heart palpitations are often temporary, but chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, or a sustained irregular heartbeat needs urgent medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What palpitations can mean
Palpitations are sensations of pounding, fluttering, racing, or skipped beats. They can occur after stress, poor sleep, caffeine, fever, or exertion. A palpitation does not by itself identify a heart problem. Possible contributors include dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, an overactive thyroid, anxiety, or an abnormal rhythm such as atrial fibrillation. Heart failure can also cause breathlessness, swelling, and a fast heartbeat, so the overall pattern matters.
What to do during an episode
Stop strenuous activity, sit upright, and breathe slowly. Note when it began, whether the beat feels regular or uneven, how long it lasts, and what you were doing beforehand. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and stimulant medicines until you have advice. Arrange a clinical review if episodes recur, last longer, or are becoming more noticeable; an examination and an ECG may help identify the rhythm.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help now for palpitations with chest pressure, fainting, severe difficulty breathing, new confusion, or marked weakness. Seek same-day medical advice for a persistent racing or irregular heartbeat, especially if you have known heart disease or symptoms such as ankle swelling. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms could relate to your medicines, thyroid function, blood count, hydration, or heart rhythm. Tell the clinician about family history, recent illness, and any home pulse readings.
