Heart palpitations after stent placement: what to know

Heart palpitations after stent placement should be reported when new, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms. Recovery, stress, pain, dehydration, anaemia, or a medicine effect can alter how the heartbeat feels. A stent does not explain every palpitation, and the sensation cannot show whether the stent is working or whether a complication is present.

Record whether the beat feels regular but forceful, rapid, or uneven, and whether it began after a new medicine or dose. Atrial Fibrillation can present with an irregular pulse. Anaemia or Iron Deficiency Anaemia may cause exertional breathlessness and a pounding heartbeat. Dehydration can reduce circulating fluid and intensify a fast pulse. Hyperthyroidism is another possible contributor. These conditions are not diagnosed by a symptom alone. Your cardiology team also needs to know about chest pressure, worsening breathlessness, dizziness, or reduced exercise tolerance.

Follow the discharge instructions and take prescribed antiplatelet or heart medicines exactly as directed; do not stop them because of palpitations unless the prescribing team tells you to. Rest, drink fluids if permitted, and avoid strenuous activity until you have clarified the episode with your cardiology team. Keep a record of timing, pulse, symptoms, and medicines. The team may arrange an ECG, blood tests, or rhythm monitoring and will decide whether activity should be limited.

Call emergency services immediately for new chest pain or pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, collapse, cold sweating, or a sustained fast or irregular heartbeat. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms resemble those that led to the stent procedure. New swelling, breathlessness while lying down, or sudden marked fatigue also needs prompt assessment because these can occur with Heart Failure.
