Hearing Test Normal but I Can't Hear: What It May Mean

A standard test measures responses to selected sounds in controlled conditions. You may still struggle when several people speak, when someone talks from another room, or when sound is unclear rather than simply quiet. Earwax buildup, temporary congestion, middle-ear pressure, tinnitus, or problems affecting balance and hearing can also change how sound feels. Meniere's Disease may include fluctuating hearing with ringing, ear fullness, or vertigo. A normal result is useful information, but it is not a complete explanation for every listening complaint.

Write down when the problem happens, whether it affects one or both ears, and whether voices sound muffled, distorted, or too soft. Note recent colds, flights, loud noise, new medicines, ringing, pain, discharge, or dizziness. Arrange a clinical review if the difficulty continues or interferes with conversations. The clinician can examine the ear, check the eardrum and pressure, review the original test conditions, and decide whether another form of hearing assessment or an ear, nose and throat referral is appropriate. Do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing loss accompanied by severe vertigo, facial weakness, a severe headache, or new neurological symptoms. Prompt assessment is also sensible for ear pain with discharge, an injury, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs need examination even if an earlier hearing test was normal.

Ask: Which parts of hearing were measured? Could earwax, pressure, or congestion explain my experience? Would speech-in-noise testing, repeat testing, or an ear examination add information? What changes should make me return sooner?
