Hearing test for an 18-month-old

The clinician may watch whether your child turns toward voices or sounds, uses words, and responds to quiet or louder tones. Depending on cooperation, testing can include soft earphones, play-based responses, or equipment that records inner-ear activity without requiring spoken answers. A result may be clear, incomplete, or suggest reduced hearing in one or both ears. Bring your child's hearing and speech history, details of recent colds or ear infections, and any concerns about responding to their name. Let the clinic know about developmental or sensory needs. A familiar toy, snack, or calm routine may help. Do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear before the appointment. If the assessment cannot be completed because your child is restless, the clinician may arrange another approach or repeat visit.

Arrange medical assessment promptly if hearing seems to change suddenly, your child has severe ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, a high fever, swelling behind the ear, or marked balance problems. Seek urgent help if your child is unusually drowsy, difficult to wake, or has sudden weakness. A hearing concern deserves review even when your child seems well, especially when speech is not progressing or responses to sound have changed.
