What should you know about hearing pressure test?

Pressure testing, often included in an ear assessment, uses a soft probe that seals the ear canal. It records movement of the eardrum as pressure shifts. The pattern can provide clues about fluid behind the eardrum, reduced eardrum movement, a problem with the pressure tube leading to the throat or an opening in the eardrum. It does not measure every part of hearing, so it may be paired with a Hearing Test.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, recent infection, surgery, a perforated eardrum or a blocked sensation. The probe should not be painful, although pressure or a brief change in sound may feel unusual. Do not place objects in the ear beforehand. If Earwax Buildup blocks the canal, the test may need to wait until the ear can be examined clearly.

Arrange prompt care for severe ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, sudden hearing loss or marked dizziness after an ear problem. Seek urgent help when hearing symptoms occur with facial weakness, difficulty speaking or a severe headache. For ongoing fullness, recurrent infections or muffled hearing, book a clinical review so the pressure result can be interpreted in context.

Ask whether the eardrum moved normally, whether both ears produced similar readings and whether fluid or pressure-tube dysfunction is suspected. Find out if hearing levels also need checking. If pressure symptoms occur with vertigo or fluctuating hearing, ask whether Meniere's Disease is relevant to your assessment.
