What should you know about hearing pitch test?

Pitch is the quality that makes a sound seem high or low. In a clinical hearing assessment, tones are presented one at a time, usually through headphones. You indicate when a tone becomes audible, and the clinician records the softest level detected for each pitch. This can reveal a pattern, such as more difficulty hearing high-pitched speech sounds, but it does not explain the cause on its own.

Before testing, mention blocked ears, recent infections, noise exposure, ringing, dizziness and any change in understanding speech. Do not clean inside the ear with cotton buds. The clinician may check for Earwax Buildup or other ear findings before relying on the test pattern. Take time afterwards to discuss whether a complete Hearing Test, observation or another assessment is needed.

Get urgent medical advice for hearing loss that appears suddenly, or for hearing change with severe vertigo, facial weakness, speech difficulty or a severe headache. A non-urgent appointment is appropriate for gradual difficulty, persistent ringing or trouble understanding people in noisy places. New hearing symptoms alongside recurrent vertigo may warrant assessment for Meniere's Disease.

Ask which pitch ranges were harder to hear and whether the finding affects one or both ears. Ask if the result could be influenced by wax, infection or middle-ear problems, and whether you need a repeat test. Clarify which changes should prompt earlier review and how to reduce exposure to loud sound.
