What should you know about a Healthmate TENS unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The device sends controlled pulses through adhesive pads placed on intact skin. People commonly feel tingling or tapping rather than a strong contraction. It can change how pain signals are processed for a period of time, but it does not diagnose or repair the cause of pain. Benefit varies, so comfort and function should guide whether it is useful.

Read the device instructions, check the leads and pads, and begin with a low comfortable setting while seated. Place pads around the painful area as directed, never over broken or irritated skin, the front of the neck, or the head. Do not use it while driving, bathing, sleeping, or near water. Ask a clinician before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced skin sensation, or are pregnant.

Stop using the unit if it causes burning, a rash, marked discomfort, dizziness, or worsening symptoms. Seek medical care for new weakness, numbness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or pain that follows a significant injury. Pain relief from TENS should not delay assessment of persistent or unexplained symptoms.
