The infection may begin with small red spots, blisters, or open sores. Fluid can dry into yellow-brown crusting, and nearby areas may be affected if bacteria transfer by scratching or touching. Gently wash the area, pat it dry, and avoid picking or lifting crusts. Keep towels, pillowcases, clothing, and razors separate until a clinician says the infection is no longer contagious. Arrange a clinical review if sores continue to spread, pain or swelling increases, pus persists, or the skin is not starting to improve after treatment. Seek prompt care for fever, marked tiredness, rapidly expanding redness, sores near the eye, or involvement of a young infant. Urgent assessment is also sensible when several household members develop sores or the diagnosis is uncertain.
