What should you know about healing an MCL sprain?

Short answer
Healing an MCL sprain usually involves protecting the knee, gradually restoring movement and strength, and returning to activity when walking and knee control are comfortable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an MCL sprain means
The medial collateral ligament runs along the inner side of the knee and helps resist the knee opening inward. A sprain can stretch or tear some of its fibres after a twist, fall, or impact. Soreness, swelling, bruising, and a feeling of weakness on the inner knee can occur. A clinician may check stability and nearby structures because pain alone cannot show the extent of the injury.
Supporting recovery
Reduce movements that cause sharp pain, such as pivoting, deep bending, or side-to-side loading. Use the support or crutches recommended after assessment, and keep gentle knee movement within a comfortable range. As walking improves, rehabilitation can build quadriceps, hamstring, hip, and balance control. Physiotherapy can guide this progression; kinesiology taping or splinting may be considered as supportive options rather than substitutes for rehabilitation.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, the knee gives way repeatedly, swelling appears quickly, or the knee cannot fully move. Seek urgent help after a major injury with visible deformity, a cold or numb foot, or severe worsening pain. Persistent inner-knee tenderness or instability also deserves review before sport or strenuous work.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the ligament feels stable, whether another knee structure may be injured, which movements are safe now, and what milestones should come before driving, work, or sport.
