What should you know about healing a sprained wrist?

Short answer

Healing a sprained wrist involves protecting the injured ligaments, keeping safe movement and gradually rebuilding grip and wrist strength.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a wrist sprain means

A wrist sprain occurs when one or more ligaments are stretched or torn, commonly after a fall onto the hand, a twist or an impact. Swelling, bruising, tenderness and reduced grip can occur. A sprain and a small fracture can look alike, so persistent wrist pain after an injury may need an examination and imaging.

The location and severity of the ligament injury shape recovery. A splint may limit painful motion while tissue settles, but prolonged complete rest can leave the wrist stiff and weak. The aim is a planned return to useful movement.

What to do

Rest from lifting, pushing and activities that increase pain. Keep the hand elevated when swollen and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods if it feels helpful. Wear a recommended splint as directed, keeping fingers moving unless told otherwise. Once pain and swelling permit, begin gentle wrist and forearm movement, then progress to grip and load under professional guidance. Physiotherapy can address stiffness, strength and technique.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment if the wrist is visibly deformed, pain is severe, swelling is rapidly increasing, or you cannot grip or move the fingers. Seek urgent help for numbness, a cold or blue hand, an open wound or pain that worsens despite protection. Review is also sensible when symptoms are not steadily improving.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether imaging is needed, which ligament may be involved, how long to use the splint, which exercises are safe and when you may return to work, driving or sport. Confirm how to protect the wrist without causing stiffness.

Questions people ask

Can I move a sprained wrist?

Gentle movement is often introduced when pain and swelling allow, but the safe range depends on the injury. Follow the specific plan given after assessment.

How do I know it is not a fracture?

You cannot reliably tell from symptoms alone. Deformity, marked tenderness, inability to use the hand or persistent pain should prompt medical review and possible imaging.
