Healed punch excision scar: what to know

Punch excision removes a small, defined section of skin, often including a scar or selected lesion, and the resulting wound is closed or allowed to heal according to its size and site. After closure, the scar can be more visible because it is round, firm, or a different colour from nearby skin. Mild sensitivity or an indentation may persist while collagen reorganises. The early appearance does not necessarily predict the settled result.

A healed scar should have an intact surface. New bleeding, separation, pus, increasing redness, or a growing tender lump calls for examination rather than home treatment alone.

Follow the procedural instructions about cleansing, dressings, and suture removal. Once the surface is fully closed, gentle moisturising and sun protection may improve comfort and reduce contrast with surrounding skin. Avoid picking, shaving directly over tenderness, or applying acids and retinoids until the clinician permits them. Take occasional photographs in similar lighting if you want to track changes, but let comfort, texture, and function guide decisions about further care.

Contact the treating clinician if the scar opens, drains, becomes hotter or more painful, or develops spreading redness. Seek prompt help for fever, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange review if the scar remains itchy, thick, painful, or cosmetically distressing after healing; options depend on its location, depth, colour, and whether the original lesion needs monitoring.

Ask whether the scar is healing as expected, when products and normal activities can resume, whether its shape or depth may soften, and how any original lesion should be monitored.
