How to heal a swollen lip

Short answer
A swollen lip may settle with gentle care, but sudden swelling needs attention when breathing or swallowing is affected.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Comfort measure
- Cool compresses can reduce discomfort.
- Emergency sign
- Breathing or swallowing difficulty requires immediate help.
What a swollen lip can mean
Swelling can follow a minor injury, biting the lip, irritation from a product, a cold sore, dental treatment, or an allergic reaction. It may affect one area or both lips and can come with tenderness, itching, redness, or warmth. Angioedema is a deeper swelling reaction that can involve the lips, face, tongue, or throat; it can occur with or without raised itchy welts.
The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may ask when it began, what you ate or applied, whether you started a medicine, and whether you have mouth, skin, or breathing symptoms.
What you can do now
Use a cool, clean compress for short periods and keep your head raised when resting. Avoid rubbing, picking, heat, spicy foods, and any new lip or facial product until the cause is clearer. Drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Do not apply a cream or take an antihistamine unless it is suitable for you and a pharmacist or clinician has advised it, especially if you take other medicines or are pregnant.
If swelling followed a sting, food, medicine, or cosmetic, record the trigger and timing. Do not deliberately test the suspected trigger again.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling comes with tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, pus, severe pain, a spreading rash, or swelling that is worsening rather than easing. A painful swollen lip after significant trauma or with a dental infection also needs assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what cause best fits the timing and appearance, whether you should avoid a medicine or product, what symptoms would require emergency help, and how to prevent another episode. If episodes recur, ask whether an allergy review or an assessment for angioedema is appropriate.

Questions people ask
How long does a swollen lip take to improve?
The timeframe depends on the cause. Mild irritation may improve after the trigger is removed, while infection or an allergic swelling reaction needs specific assessment.
Should I massage a swollen lip?
No. Massage can irritate injured tissue and may worsen swelling; use a cool compress instead.
