How to soothe sunburn quickly

Short answer
Sunburn cannot be safely reversed overnight, but cooling the skin, replacing fluids, avoiding further sun, and using gentle moisturising can reduce discomfort while it heals.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Immediate care
- Cool gently, moisturise, and avoid more sun
- Do not do
- Pop blisters or peel the skin
What sunburn does to skin
Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet exposure. Skin redness, warmth, tenderness, and later peeling are common features; blisters indicate a deeper injury. The affected skin may feel tight or itchy as it recovers. A sunburn also signals ultraviolet damage, so repeated exposure can contribute to long-term sun-damaged skin.
Relief for the next day
Move out of direct sun and take a cool, not icy, shower or apply a cool damp cloth. Pat dry and use a fragrance-free emollient while the skin is slightly damp. Drink fluids, wear loose soft clothing, and use a suitable pain reliever if you can take it safely. Do not pop blisters, peel loose skin, scrub, or apply ice, butter, or fragranced products. Protect the area from more ultraviolet exposure until it has recovered.
When to seek care
Get prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, fainting, or signs of dehydration. Urgent care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a child who appears seriously unwell. Do not apply topical corticosteroids to blistered or broken skin unless a clinician directs you.
Questions for your doctor
How extensive is the burn, and what can I safely apply to it? Do the blisters need dressing or review? Which pain relief is suitable for me, and when can I return to normal sun protection and activities?

Questions people ask
Can I heal sunburn overnight?
Overnight care can ease symptoms, but the skin needs time to repair the ultraviolet injury.
Should I use ice on sunburn?
Avoid direct ice because intense cold can further irritate injured skin; use a cool damp cloth instead.
