How can you soothe a sore throat?

Short answer
A sore throat may improve with fluids, rest, soothing drinks, and simple pain relief while you watch for breathing, swallowing, or dehydration warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can cause throat pain
A Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19 can inflame the throat alongside cough, congestion, fever, tiredness, or body aches. Allergic Rhinitis can cause irritation from nasal drainage. Acid Reflux may cause burning, hoarseness, or a sore throat that is worse after meals or on waking.
Tonsillitis and Strep Throat are other possibilities, particularly when pain is prominent or swallowing is difficult. Glandular Fever can cause marked fatigue and swollen glands. A sore throat does not by itself identify the cause, so the direction of assessment should follow the full symptom pattern.
Comfort measures
Drink regularly, choose soft foods, rest your voice, and use warm or cool drinks according to what feels more soothing. Gargling with warm salty water may help some adults who can gargle safely. Avoid smoking, vaping, and highly irritating foods.
A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief based on your age, pregnancy status, allergies, and other medicines. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat viral causes and may delay the right assessment.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, confusion, or severe dehydration. Arrange prompt medical review for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, persistent high fever, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your examination suggests a viral illness, tonsil problem, reflux, allergy, or another cause; whether a throat swab or other test is needed; and which pain relief is appropriate. Share the duration, fever, cough, rash, swollen glands, exposure history, and ability to drink.

No. Many sore throats are linked to viral illnesses, while antibiotics are used only when a clinician finds a bacterial reason.
What should I do if swallowing becomes difficult?
Seek prompt medical advice, especially if you cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, or have any breathing difficulty.
