How to heal razor bumps

Short answer
Razor bumps improve when shaving is paused, the skin is treated gently, and future hair removal avoids pulling or cutting hairs too close to the skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Pause close hair removal
- Avoid
- Digging, squeezing, and repeated razor passes
What is happening
A razor bump develops when a short hair curves back into nearby skin and triggers inflammation. It can look like a small red or skin-coloured bump, sometimes with an ingrown hair or a tender pustule. Repeated close shaving, waxing, friction, and curly or coarse hair can contribute. Folliculitis can look similar but involves inflammation around follicles and may need different treatment.
Calm the area and prevent repeats
Pause shaving or waxing until the area settles. Wash gently, use a warm compress for comfort, and do not dig, squeeze, or pick at trapped hairs. When shaving again, soften the hair first, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth with light strokes, and avoid repeated passes. A clinician may recommend a suitable topical product for inflammation or follicle plugging. Laser hair removal can be discussed when recurrent bumps make hair removal difficult.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, or a lump that is not settling. Arrange review if bumps leave scars or dark marks, recur after careful technique, or appear in areas that have not been shaved.
Questions for your doctor
Are these ingrown hairs, folliculitis, pseudofolliculitis barbae, or another condition? Which hair-removal method fits my skin and hair pattern? Would laser hair removal be appropriate, and how can I reduce marks while the area heals?

Questions people ask
Should I remove the trapped hair?
Do not dig into the skin. Once the hair is clearly at the surface, gentle release is safer than probing, but medical advice is preferable for recurrent bumps.
Can razor bumps scar?
Yes. Ongoing inflammation or picking can leave dark marks or raised scars, so early gentle care matters.
