How to help nappy rash settle quickly

Nappy rash is irritation in the covered area, often caused by moisture, rubbing, contact with urine or stool, or a recent change in products. The skin may look red, sore, or shiny. A rash with small spots beyond the main red area, involvement of skin folds, or persistent discomfort can reflect a yeast infection rather than simple irritation.

Change the nappy as soon as it is wet or soiled. Rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free wipe, pat dry rather than rubbing, and allow short periods without a nappy when practical. Apply a generous layer of barrier ointment or another suitable emollient at every change; do not scrub all of the previous layer away if the skin is clean. Avoid fragranced products, talc, and tight nappies. If a clinician identifies yeast, use the prescribed topical antifungal treatment as directed.

Contact a clinician if the rash is worsening, blistered, bleeding, crusted, very painful, or accompanied by fever or a child who seems unwell. Seek advice when it does not start improving with careful nappy care, or if it repeatedly returns.
