What should you know about a headphone hearing test?

Online or app-based tests play tones through headphones and ask when you can hear them. The result may be affected by headphone quality, background noise, volume settings, and whether the left and right sides are tested separately. It may suggest that hearing is reduced, but it cannot examine the ear canal or distinguish problems involving the outer, middle, or inner ear.
