Headache with strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. People with strep throat may develop a sore throat that starts quickly, fever, headache, painful swallowing, and swollen glands in the neck. Tonsillitis can look similar because the tonsils become inflamed; viruses can cause the same cluster of symptoms. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness can point toward another cause, but only a clinical assessment and, when appropriate, a throat test can guide the diagnosis. A headache is therefore one part of the picture rather than a stand-alone test.

Drink regularly, choose soft foods, and rest. Warm fluids or cool drinks may soothe the throat, depending on what feels comfortable. Use only pain or fever medicines that are suitable for you and follow the label directions; ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a chronic condition. Antibiotic Treatment is used only when a bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected by a clinician.

Get urgent help if you have difficulty breathing, cannot swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, neck swelling, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Seek medical advice for a high or persistent fever, worsening symptoms, a spreading rash, or symptoms that are not improving. Keep distance from others and avoid sharing cups or utensils while an infectious throat illness is possible.

Ask whether your examination suggests Strep Throat, Tonsillitis, or another infection; whether a throat test is needed; and which treatment is appropriate. Check when you can return to work or school and what symptoms should prompt reassessment.
