Headache due to sunstroke: what to know

A headache during sunstroke can signal dangerous overheating and needs urgent cooling and medical assessment. Sunstroke, also called heat stroke, can affect the brain and other organs; do not treat a suspected case as an ordinary headache or wait for it to pass.

After heat exposure, the body may stop controlling its temperature effectively. Headache may occur with confusion, unusual behaviour, faintness, very hot skin, weakness, nausea, or vomiting. Sweating may be present or absent, so it does not rule out heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can worsen into a more dangerous condition and requires attention to symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately if sunstroke is suspected. Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned place, remove unnecessary outer clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, fans, or cool water. Stay with them and monitor responsiveness. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, drowsy, vomiting, or unable to swallow safely. Do not delay emergency care while trying home treatment.

Urgent assessment is needed for headache after heat exposure with confusion, seizure, collapse, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, or a very high body temperature. Even if the person seems better after cooling, medical review is needed because heat-related injury may continue after the headache improves.

Ask what heat exposure likely contributed, whether kidney or other organ checks are needed, how to return safely to activity, and how to prevent another episode. Mention the setting, duration of exposure, symptoms, cooling measures, and any medicines that may affect heat tolerance.
