Headache and heartburn

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents irritate the food pipe. Acid Reflux can worsen after a large meal, lying down, bending, or eating a personal trigger food. Gastritis, a Peptic Ulcer, or a Hiatus Hernia can also cause upper abdominal or chest discomfort. Headache may arise separately from poor sleep, missed meals, dehydration, stress, or an illness. Some anti-inflammatory pain medicines can irritate the stomach and worsen reflux or ulcer symptoms, so the timing of each symptom and any medicine use is useful information.

Stay upright after eating, choose smaller meals, and avoid lying down soon after food. Sip water and notice whether particular foods, alcohol, caffeine, or late meals trigger burning. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Ask a pharmacist whether an antacid or Acid Reflux Medication is suitable, particularly if you are pregnant or take other medicines. Avoid taking extra anti-inflammatory pain medicine for the headache unless a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is appropriate for you.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe chest pain, sweating, fainting, or breathlessness, especially when discomfort spreads to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Seek prompt care for vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or severe persistent upper abdominal pain. Arrange a clinical review when heartburn is frequent, changes suddenly, or does not settle with sensible measures.
